The New High-Density Power Hub for Fieldbus

Smaller than ever and always with redundancy

Fieldbus Foundation logo
The newest Foundation Fieldbus Power Hub is a fieldbus power supply. With an output of 25…27 V/360 mA up to four segments can be powered with this smaller relative of the already popular FieldConnex® Power Hub. This power supply is designed as a solution for many fieldbus applications where cable length and number of devices per segment require moderate output power. The high-density Power Hub features redundant power modules as standard and the optional Advanced Diagnostic Module enables plant operators to include the fieldbus physical layer in the list of actively monitored assets for superior plant availability.

We mean high density

Two aspects mark out high density when considering the complete installation in the cabinet or switch room:
  • The low power dissipation of electronic components shows its benefit in the tightly packed modules
  • This results in a very small footprint of the motherboard

The installer is free to mount the motherboard in any direction. The system designer can therefore choose the optimal cabinet layout, resulting in a larger number of segments per cabinet. This is how valuable floor space is saved.

Installation and operation is easy and reliable; as our customers have come to expect from the leader in fieldbus technology. The motherboard is mounted on a DIN-Rail and all terminals feature connectors with retaining screws. The motherboards are most reliable with zero active components. There are always two slots per segment for redundant configuration of power modules. They plug into the motherboard and can be exchanged under live conditions without the use of tools; and bumpless for fieldbus communication. Redundancy of power supply electronics is always included for superior system reliability and availability.

A time and money saver

Your initial investment benefits from fewer cabinets and thus less enclosed space is required. Installation time is minimal with the design made by professionals for professionals. During operation, the energy-efficient design avoids excessive heat in the cabinet and provides long service life. Each power supply module contains electronics for one segment only. Exchange is limited to the faulty circuit only.

The optional Advanced Diagnostic Module reduces fieldbus commissioning and documentation to a few mouse clicks. The trunk and every field device can be checked and documented within minutes after being connected to the fieldbus.

Imagine what Advanced Diagnostics can do to keep plant operation safe from changes to the fieldbus. It will warn the operator about alterations to the fieldbus installation: The physical layer. It may be altered or harmed suddenly through human intervention or slow effects caused by aging and decay. Knowing what has changed enables operations and maintenance personnel make decisions before system failure, thus preventing unintended plant shut downs. This is probably the best way to reduce operational expenditures.

What about passive impedance generation?

The newest FieldConnex product features the Pepperl+Fuchs standard, passive impedance generation. This is an important part of the FieldConnex® power supply.

Usually the low internal resistance of the power supply would short circuit the data signals. This is prevented by the internal impedance generation circuits which are connected in series with the power supply. However, this also means that the full load current is shouldered by the impedance generation.

Exclusively passive components, as shown in the diagram, are best suited for long service life while continuously exposed to the load current. Thus passive impedance generation is long-lived and contributes to highest availability compared to active transistors.
